| Carla Gugino goes straight to the web in Girl Walks Into a Bar | |
Stop me if you’ve heard this one: Carla Gugino and director Sebastian Gutierrez make a movie together. Wait, you have? Well, this one is new.
The filmmaker and the sexy actress have (besides IRL) collaborated a number of times — WOMEN IN TROUBLE, RISE, ELEKTRA LUXX, the cable movie SHE CREATURE, etc. Their latest is the oddball comedy GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR, the first major motion picture created exclusively for online distribution.
Gutierrez says: “We want to prove that Web distribution is a viable medium for theatrical quality movies which rely on story, characters and dialogue as opposed to special effects. For many reasons the theatrical indie landscape has changed drastically in the last few years, leaving many potential breakout hits without an audience. We are excited to break the rules of feature films by letting people watch our movie for free online.”
GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR connects a group of apparent strangers over one night across 10 bars throughout Los Angeles. Zachary Quinto (STAR TREK) stars as a dentist who teams up with a feisty would-be assassin (Carla Gugino) to put the final touches on the plan to kill his wife. Once he makes a play for the assassin’s payment, he unknowingly sets off a chain of events that fuels a cross-town journey through the many lounges, bars, strip clubs and the occasional nudist ping pong club scattered across Los Angeles. Along the way, we are introduced to a series of idiosyncratic characters, from gangsters (Danny DeVito) to exotic dancers (Emmanuelle Chriqui, Alexis Bledel), from ex-cons (Robert Forster) to cops (Josh Hartnett, Gil Bellows), with the odd hatcheck girl (Rosario Dawson) and bartender (Amber Valletta) thrown in for good measure.
